How to Determine the Right Andis Clippers For Your Horse Grooming Needs

Andis Hair Clipper Corporation was founded in 1921 by Mathew Andis, Sr. He has built a working model of an electric hair clipper, which was much smaller and lighter sales beginning in time. His family gathered in the Clippers first in the basement of his home in Racine, WI. He sold door to door to the hairdressers and salons in the area of Racine.

Started after a few years of production fà ¼ r hairdressing and beauty industry, Andisoffering a complete line of clippers and trimmers for animal grooming. Their goal in the animal clippers line was to focus on a clipper that did the whole grooming job, head, ears and body. Today, they are still noted for a large animal clipper that is durable, easy to handle and fully functional.

There are over twenty trimmers and clippers in the Andis horse and large animal line. They offer a full range of cordless, single speed, multi speed and professional grade models.

Trimmers – Keeping with their goal of clippers for the whole job, Andis offers the following trimmers:

Freedom Cord/Cordless Clipper
Ruby Cord/Cordless Clipper/Trimmer
Adjustable Ear Clipper

The trimmers range in price from $44 to $80, and all have the good looks and functionality that Andis is noted for. Our personal favorite in the trimmers is the Ruby. At about $60, it comes with a unique charging stand and a full range of different blades for cutting and trimming (we don’t recommend any big cutting jobs). This unit is a good buy for the flexibility that comes with the extra blades.

Single Speed Clippers – Andis offers a full range of single speed clippers with Strokes Per Minute (SPM) from 2,000 to 7,200.

One of the above, The Super AGR+, is rechargeable and several (4,6,7,8 and 9) we would classify as professional grade (designed for long periods of comfortable, continuous operations). Although Andis classifies the Super AGR+ a professional grade clipper, we did not. By definition, you do not satisfy the continuous operations criteria with a rechargeable because of the need to stop and recharge. Cutting quality can also decline if you continue cutting after long term operations without recharge. We have two choices in this classification. If you do intermittent grooming on a single horse we would recommend the Andis AGC Single Speed Professional Clipper. It is good all around clipper for the price (around $115). If you are a professional groomer and are cutting every day for long hours, then the Heinager Model 68019 is for you. The $200 price tag for this Swiss precision piece, is well worth the smooth operations and high quality cutting you will see from this clipper.

Multiple Speed Clippers – The multiple speed clippers are where Andis Shines. Most are two speed with their highest end large animal clipper having three speeds.

If you are a professional groomer (or you own a stable full of horses you groom yourself) working many hours every day on different horse breeds, the Delta3 Cattle and Horse Clipper is probably the right choice. At around $275, you are buying a lot of flexibility, durability and quality in your cutting. Plus, the ergonomic design of the Delta3, supports long hours of different types of cutting each day.
